#27 Maureen O. Betita

Ah, why did I choose The Kraken’s Mirror for a trip to the moon, and the future… Good question. The Kraken’s Mirror is the first of my books to be published. It was written on a sort of dare…to create a romantic couple who aren’t twenty-somethings. Me, being me, took it as far as I could, creating a world of Hollywood piratitude. The Kraken’s Caribbean is full of anachronisms, pirates with iPods, ice at the taverns…all set in Tortuga, circa the late 1600s.

This book meant a great deal to me. It anchored my belief in breaking rules, as I trampled over history, ignored science, tossed in magic and to top it off, a match making Great Albino Kraken. Because…why not?

This book is me. I’m Maureen O. Betita and I’ve been writing pirates for over a decade. Welcome and climb aboard!

The Kraken’s Mirror is an odd book…it doesn’t fit all nice and neatly into any particular genre. Yes, it has pirates. (But it isn’t historical.) Yes, it has a romance. It contains magical elements, but also time travel. (Paranormal? Maybe…) And, of course, if features seasoned characters, long considered past their prime by most standards.

Ah, but life in the Kraken’s Caribbean, as the series is named, is different than any might suppose. Lifespan is greater, and so many of the pesky elements of actual history? Well, they aren’t here. Ships have functional sanitary stations, for instance. Good cooks, a full assortment of food. No bedbugs, no weevils, none of the ‘nasty’ realities of history. Yet it is set in the time span considered the Golden Age of Piracy, late 1690s. In the Caribbean, Tortuga to be specific.

Oh, and my pirates seldom stink. And they have good teeth!

I wanted a Hollywood pirate world. And the taverns needed ice, and boom boxes and working the lines with your iPod was a must.

Welcome to The Kraken’s Caribbean – Where anything can happen, and probably will!

The Kraken’s Mirror, book one of The Kraken’s Caribbean

Captain Alan Silvestri is a man haunted by a strange curse. Good luck is his to command, but it comes at the cost of a place to call home or people to reckon as family. Resigned to die and shunned by all, he is forced to sail every three days, until he begins to dream of a special woman.

Treated by our youth-oriented society as invisible and sexless, Emily Pawes is ready to move on. She attends a pirate festival, hoping to recapture the make-believe magic she knew as a young woman. She wins an interesting bit of booty at a brick-a-brac stand, and is transported by the Kraken’s mirror to a land of Hollywood piratitude. With little choice, she embraces the madness. Playing pirate has to be safer than falling into the arms of handsome Captain Silvestri, right?

When they meet the sparks fly. He needs her to be free, but more than that, she will make him whole. Setting sail and uncertain of who actually controls the wheel, they seek ways to defeat his curse of good luck and discover the Kraken’s mirror has plans for them. Will Emily stay in this pirate haven to fight alongside him or will he lose her because of his curse?
