#39 Hanna Steenbock
Hannah Steenbock is the pen name of a German author. Here, she tells you why this moon mission felt so important to her:
I’ve always been interested in history. This is partially rooted in German history and what it means for us in the 21st century. But it’s also rooted in the age-old question where we humans came from.
As a child, I wanted to study archaeology. Later, when I understood that excavating dinosaur bones meant studying geology, my dreams changed. And then I went and studied English and Spanish first.
When I added a few semesters of true archaeology in University, I found many more questions than answers. In fact, I was stunned and impressed by the ingenuity that humans have demonstrated at every time in history – using it for both wonderful and terrible endeavors.
Of course, archaeology only covers the physical remains of earlier lives and cultures. Any written documents belong to “history” as a subject. Yet even both together only open a tiny window into the thoughts people had and the stories that humans must have been telling each other since our brains got big enough for imagination.
And that is why I tell stories, rather than trying to dig them up now.
“Dragon Prey” is one of those stories that show what humans are capable of in the face of adversary and danger. About how some people choose to overcome limiting beliefs and find creative solutions while others fall into denial and delusion.
The adversaries here are mystical beasts, firebreathing, winged monsters that are a mainstream of the fantasy genre at this time. Dragons have never existed on Earth, but they are firmly embedded in the imagination of storytellers and have been for centuries.
My healer Sidren, the main character in this tale, has the best interests of her clan in mind, and that is why she ends up looking for unlikely, inventive solutions. I hope that she represents the best of what humans can be.
We need positive stories at all times, and that is why I prefer writing uplifting ones. And if you manage to extract the file, to make it readable, I hope you enjoy this tale from one woman’s imagination in the 21st century – our best and brightest ability as humans.
