#100 JW Garrett

J. W. Garrett, Award-Winning Author of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Manifest #100

A collection of books, stories, and poetry is catching a ride with a Lunar Time Capsule on board Peregrine Mission One. What a journey! Forever to remain on the surface of the moon.

Words become more when shared with others. These will find a unique home.

Detailed below are works included in J. W. Garrett’s Manifest #100.

Thanks to Dr. Susan Kaye Quinn and Writers on the Moon for the opportunity to take part in Peregrine Mission One. Astrobotic and DHL have partnered to deliver each MoonBox aboard Astrobotic’s lunar landers. I’m thrilled to be included on the first Astrobotic lander to reach the moon and am awed by the fact that the MoonBox will remain there permanently—a time capsule for future generations to discover and explore.

I never would have dreamed that my sci-fi fantasy collection, Realms of Chaos, would travel to outer space, the setting for my series. The books are a mixture of historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction, a developing saga of two families from two different planets whose lives weave together, despite significant obstacles to the contrary.

More details follow below on the written works included in Manifest #100.

Works included by J. W. Garrett

My books and stories gravitate heavily toward themes of love, family, and survival, all characterized in the selections I’ve made, described below.

Remeon’s Destiny, set in 1947, is the first book in the Realms of Chaos series, although there is a prequel, Remeon’s Quest, set in 1930. Destiny is also the book listed on the manifest since it is the story that started my author journey. The main character, Thomas, is inspired by my father and his teenage years spent working on the family farm in Lexington, VA. As this coming-of-age tale begins, Thomas, bored with life on the farm, gets more than he bargains for, when he’s abducted and taken to another planet with the power to cure their society’s fatal disease. A struggle for life ensues as Thomas fights for his family and his core beliefs on a planet called Remeon, full of cold, and oftentimes cruel, individuals fighting for their existence.

Note: Remeon’s Destiny was published in 2018, well before the 2020 pandemic. https://books2read.com/RemeonsDestiny

Remeon’s Quest is the prequel for the series, set in 1930. Times are hard for Jack and sidekick Harry, who get caught up in a sweep of Earth conducted by Remeonites. A journey of discovery unfolds as Jack and Harry find themselves immersed in a culture of magic and telepathy, while the Remeon population faces the impacts of a deadly disease devastating their society. https://www.books2read.com/RemeonsQuest

Remeon’s Crusade, the third book in the series, explores themes of family and life and death, as Jack reunites with his children via portal travel from Earth to Remeon. Jack’s offspring spread their wings in a show of power as they mature in their magical abilities. Parenting is difficult under the best of circumstances but especially so between star systems. https://books2read.com/RemeonsCrusade

The final volume, Remeon’s Legacy, is still forthcoming, with themes of reconciliation and healing broken relationships, focusing on true love that spans across galaxies. https://books2read.com/RemeonsLegacy

“Hidden in the Arms of Time” is a Christmas short story, near and dear to my heart, which is different from most in that it focuses on Mrs. Claus’s journey. When she embarks from the North Pole on Christmas Eve, Mrs. Claus possesses the power to right wrongs during this special time of the year. Her mission? To battle time for the good of the few. https://www.books2read.com/HiddenIntheArmsofTime-AMrsClausStory

“When Lightning Reigns” is a poem included in a collection for children titled Jibbernocky. The poem describes the transformation that occurs as a young girl faces her fear during a storm, determined to fight what lurks inside, with the help of friends who she summons to her aid. https://books2read.com/u/3RPOlx

“My Day at Neptune,” a short story, written by a very much younger me, is a whimsical tale of a “one-day” journey to Neptune, complete with castles, kings, and knights. Who wouldn’t want to take a day trip to Neptune? However, I’ll give up the ending… One day turned into much longer. I decided to stay!

Writing sometimes seems like a lonely road, but I’m never alone on my journey. Included within my payload, surrounded by all my writerly works, are family photos, since they are my inspiration for all I write, now and in the future. It’s fitting that their representation be tucked inside my words, as they live in me.

I discovered in my young adulthood that my father wrote poetry. Writing is a passion we shared, and I’m grateful to have found out before his death, so we could experience that adventure together. This bond that united us further motivated my desire to write. Thus so committed, I moved forward with a renewed purpose. I’m so happy to be including three selections of his, the first written especially for me.

“Grown Up and Leaving,” by S. T. Womeldorf

“Trouble in Paradise,” by S. T. Womeldorf, a retelling of the Adam and Eve story

“A Ship Can Float with No Water,” by S. T. Womeldorf, a retelling of Noah’s story

I’ve also included a selection by my grandfather, Prentiss Womeldorf, “The Early Years,” which includes details of his early life working on the farm. These two men, along with my mother, husband, and my other grandparents, have significantly altered the course of my life. I wish I could tell them personally that their words were traveling to the moon!

Stowaway #1

Black Hare Press

Storming Area 51 is an anthology from Black Hare Press, edited by D. Kershaw and Ben Thomas, and is particularly suited for this voyage to the moon. Through its pages, a brief history of humanity is told, spanning from 2019–2519. A unique and horrifying sci-fi tale, the stories are woven together, detailing the human-alien battle as it unfolds, beginning with storming the gate. A massively entertaining read. Perhaps what lies hidden should sometimes remain so…

When an unsuspecting young man from California instigates a comedic social media campaign to storm Area 51—the site of alien legend—little does he realize that this small action will bring about the end of the world as we know it.

I’m so grateful to be part of this expedition. And I can’t wait for our pilgrimage through space, for the words included in this manifest to reach their destination, to soar among the stars and mingle with moon dust, finally to settle on that glowing orb for all time. Prime for discovery, nestling with eternity. The journey is only beginning…
