#10 Kody Boye
Hello everyone,
My name is Kody Boye. As of January 2021, I am a twenty-eight-year-old writer and college student living in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. I am, as of this date, studying Creative Writing and English at Southern New Hampshire University. My goal is to eventually impart my knowledge to others by teaching at the college level.
If you are here, you are likely wanting to learn more about my novel The Monsters Within, my When They Came trilogy, or my Beautiful Ones series, which are all going to be included onboard the Lunar Capsule.
To begin: The Monsters Within is a standalone novel about finding oneself during the darkest period of their life. Having grown up in an abusive home environment, the main character, Dean McAllen – a blossoming writer in his own right – flees his small hometown to attend college halfway across the country. While setting up his dorm room, he meets his dormmate – a man by the name of Brad Michelson – who will inadvertently change his life forever.
Though The Monsters Within is a story about love and finding redemption from your past, it is also a stark portrayal of how mental illness manifests within those whose pasts have left them fractured, but not broken. It draws upon my own personal experiences of not only just living my life as a mentally-ill person, but also as someone who lives with HIV (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.) We learn, in The Monsters Within, that sometimes, opening up to someone can leave you vulnerable to many things. In Dean McAllen’s case: this is a curse that will leave him battling for his life.
Meanwhile, When They Came tells the story of a young woman who becomes caught up in an intergalactic war after she is bitten by an alien scout. It was my first foray into writing fiction for young adults, and I credit it with deciding my future as a young-adult storyteller. I worked to develop a bleak dystopian existence throughout this series, during which mankind has come under siege by forces beyond their military powers. It was partially inspired by my fears over the future when I was about to move to (and then live in) the Dallas / Fort Worth area for three unexpected years.
And finally: my most disturbing reads, I feel, come in the form of The Beautiful Ones trilogy. In this series – which takes place in a country known as the Great South, which is formerly the southern half of the United States – young women are selected annually by Gentlewomen of their territories to become Beautiful Ones, which girls believe is a chance out of poverty and for national celebrity, but is really a part of a eugenics program that costs them their free will. I wrote these novels shortly after I completed the When They Came trilogy, and though does not have aliens, I feel it is undoubtedly disturbing nonetheless.
Thank you for coming along on this ride with not only me, but all the other wonderful authors whose works will be sent to the moon for future generations.
Sincerely,
Kody Boye
