#17 Marilyn Peake
I’m delighted to be part of the Writers on the Moon project organized by Dr. Susan Kaye Quinn. Having my work on the Moon feels like science sprinkled with magic dust. Because this is a writers’ project, most of the files I’ve included are books I’ve written. However, since I also love photography and compete in local competitions at the Master’s (highest) level, I decided to submit some of my photographs as well. I selected photos from two of my favorite categories, Travel and Nature, to provide images of Earth as it exists in our present time. I truly hope nature survives and flourishes, as it’s both precious and necessary for human survival. When we were told to include things that are important to us in order to give an idea of who we are as a person, I decided to include family photographs from when my children were little to the present time when they’re adults. As I’m happily married and love being a mom to my two wonderful sons, family photos are among my most cherished possessions.
I chose SHADE, the first book in my YA Paranormal Mystery series, as the book that would be listed on the manifest. In SHADE, the main character creates a graphic novel about a girl who has superpowers every time she wears leotards made by rovers on Mars. When I found out I could choose which of my books to send to the Moon to reside on a lander there, I decided SHADE had to be among them. If the main character were a real person, I know she’d be delighted by this.
For my other book files, I chose the subsequent books I’ve written so far in my YA Paranormal Mystery series as well as a selection of books I’ve written in other genres.
My YA Paranormal Mystery series includes: SHADE, SHADE AND THE SKINWALKERS, SHADE AND THE CASTLE BY THE SEA, SHADE AND THE PURE-BLOOD FAERIES, and SHADE AND THE VAMPIRES OF ROMANIA. I’m currently writing SHADE AND THE CRYSTAL ORB. All of these novels deal with social issues within a fantasy setting.
My MUTATION Z: BOOKS 1-6 boxed set includes a series of novelettes and novellas that cross a number of genres: Zombie Fiction, Science Fiction and Genetic Engineering. I began writing this series at the beginning of the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak that occurred in West Africa. I wrote these books as a conspiracy-theory-type story, asking the question what would happen if the United States government, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) all kept the real nature and source of an Ebola-Zombie virus mutation secret from the general population. It’s a bit eerie that I find myself revisiting this series in order to upload it to the Writers on the Moon project at a time when we’re living, in real life down here on Earth, through the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in which a number of world leaders did indeed try to hide factual information about this virus from their citizens. COVID-19 has also begun mutating into more contagious and possibly more dangerous forms at the present time. Vaccines are beginning to be administered, however, so hopefully the history books will tell the story of how we got the pandemic under control.
My Science Fiction novel, THE OTHER, is a story about prejudice and fear and what happens when visitors from elsewhere arrive on Earth. I’m thrilled to have this outer-space-themed book going to the Moon.
My novelette, THROUGH THE TRAPDOOR: A FEYLAND STORY, was originally published in the GAME ON! anthology organized by Anthea Sharp, a fellow author in the Writers on the Moon project. It’s set in Anthea’s incredible world of FEYLAND. I chose this book because it’s about stepping into another world, the world of computer games, and so it seems appropriate that it would also get to fly to the Moon.
THE STORY BEHIND MY PHOTOGRAPHS:
Writing and photography are two of my favorite things in the world and my love for my family tops both. The written word takes up much less room on a disk than images do, so I had to be very selective in which of my photographs to send to the Moon, as there was limited space. I’ve taken thousands of photographs over the years and also have many photographs of my family in which I’m included. Here’s the story of why I chose the specific photographs I did.
Travel and Nature Photos:
Photo taken on the Dingle Peninsula, Ireland in 2013: In 2013, I went to Ireland to meet some of my family members who live there. It was a wonderful trip! My family members were kind and gracious and wonderful to spend time with. It turned out we had a lot in common, which was awesome. While there, I also did some sightseeing. The Dingle Peninsula had gorgeous scenic spots, including this one.
Photo taken at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park in Agua Dulce, California in 2016: Vasquez Rocks is a rugged, scenic spot in California. It’s one of my favorite places to hike and photograph. Many scenes have been filmed there for movies, television shows, music videos and video games. (For our family Christmas card one year, we dressed up in STAR TREK outfits and posed in front of this rock formation where STAR TREK has filmed quite a few scenes.)
Photo taken at Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu, California in 2018: Leo Carrillo Beach is another of my favorite places to hike and photograph. There are a lot of fascinating rock formations there, which combined with the ocean surf makes it an awesome place to visit. The rock formation in this photograph is one of my favorites, as it’s a resting place for birds. At the time I took this photo, the rock was filled with birds and the surf was breaking against the rocks. I took a series of photos and was lucky to catch a couple of birds in flight at the exact same moment the surf crashed against the rocks in this one.
Photo taken of The Great Geysir in Iceland in 2019: My husband and I went to Iceland with an adventure travel group in 2019. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I stood at this spot taking photo after photo, trying to get a good shot of the geyser as it erupted. My arms were aching from holding the camera for so long, but it was well worth it. This particular photograph won first place at our local photography club, which gave me enough first place wins to begin competing at the Master’s (highest) level.
Family Photos
Family photo taken of me and my two sons in 1994: This photograph was taken by my husband when my youngest son was just a few months old and my oldest son had recently turned five years old. I took similar photographs of my husband with our sons that same day, as we were taking photos for our family’s Christmas card. The story behind this photo is quite entertaining, as it actually took many photos for us to capture one where the baby was looking up and our older son was smiling at the exact same moment. This has always been one of my favorite photographs.
Family photo taken of me and my two sons in 1995: This is another of my favorite photos from when my children were little. My husband took it at Kings Dominion, one of our favorite amusement parks.
Family photo taken with lightsabers in 2006: This photograph was taken for our Christmas card in 2006. We’re all huge STAR WARS fans with each of us owning at least one lightsaber, so posing for a series of these photographs was a lot of fun. Afterward, my husband used PaintShop Pro to intensify the glow of the lightsabers in the picture.
Family photo of my husband and me in Los Angeles, California in 2013: This photograph of my husband and me was taken by our oldest son when he took us to a soup dumpling restaurant in Los Angeles. We had a great time and the soup dumplings were delicious.
Family photo taken at Lake Tahoe in 2017: This photograph was taken of me and my family while we were hiking on a vacation in Lake Tahoe. We had a great time there and the scenery was beautiful. (Lake Tahoe straddles the border of California and Nevada. We rented a house on the California side.)
Family photo taken in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2018: This photograph is one of my favorites taken during a special weekend in Las Vegas that my husband and children planned for my birthday in 2018. We all had a fantastic time! I love Cirque du Soleil shows, so my family surprised me with tickets for all of us to see two of their shows: Mystère and The Beatles LOVE. Both were wonderful. We did other fun things in Las Vegas as well: played some poker games, ate at a variety of restaurants, went to a magic show and participated in a mystery-solving event. This photograph was taken after the Cirque du Soleil Mystère show while we were celebrating my birthday over a special dessert. We had chocolate bread pudding that tasted more like incredible chocolate cake and it was topped with edible gold. I’ll never forget this awesome birthday, one of my best ever.
These photos show a time before the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when we were free to travel and socialize. Hopefully, we’ll soon return to that kind of freedom after enough people have been vaccinated.
