#33 Jemi Fraser
I’m Jemi Fraser and I’m thrilled to be part of the Writers on the Moon project!
As a kid I was always fascinated by the What ifs and the Why nots. Still am.
Star Trek hooked me early and then I discovered science fiction books. My parents bought me a gilded boxed hardcover of The Hobbit (JRR Tolkien) for my 9th birthday and I fell in love with fantasy as well. One of my first attempts at writing was a YA steampunk story with tons of intriguing inventions. Needs a lot of work but one day I’ll get back to it.
You’ll generally find a few SF (speculative fiction) references in all of my Bloo Moose stories. These references are to books, TV shows, movies, and comics. I adore SF so the thought of having one of my stories on the moon is so very, very cool.
As a writer, I mostly focus on romantic suspense stories. Stories that have danger lurking but are all about people learning to trust themselves and that special someone in their lives. When we take chances and believe in ourselves, everything is possible. Love is definitely worth the risk!
The Bloo Moose Romantic Suspense series is set in contemporary Vermont. Each story features a stand-alone romantic suspense adventure with a different couple. While all the stories have different themes, all showcase people learning to understand themselves and love themselves so they can love others.
The Small Town Heroes series focuses on a scientific think tank that aims to improve our world and the people who work to keep the scientists safe. The think tank happens to be an old fishing lodge in the middle of Vermont that the team is taking off the grid.
I’ve also written a nonfiction book about dementia and how our family coped when the disease slammed into us: Dancing With Dementia: Recognizing and Coping with the Early Stages of Dementia. This book is the story of our journey with dementia, written in the hope that it would help others. I hope if someone in the future finds our time capsule, that both a cure and a prevention exist for this disease that damages so much more than a person’s brain.
The story I’ve included in our time capsule is Reaching For Christmas: A Bloo Moose Romance.
I chose Christmas to go to the moon because one of the themes running through the story is about the power and importance of creativity. The world is often dark and creativity is one of the best ways I know to fill that darkness with light and joy and hope.
This is the fifth book in the Bloo Moose Romantic Suspense series. Lil is a photographer and Max writes thrillers. Lil and Max are at different stages of their careers but they’re both facing a type of crossroads and need to make major decisions about their next steps.
There are a few themes in the story – love, family, hope, healing, and creativity.
The power of creativity is one of the best things about humans. Without that creativity we certainly wouldn’t be sending our stories to the moon!
We imagine, we hope, we visualize, we reach for More, and then we showcase that More in a kaleidoscope of ways.
Through the arts.
Through science and reaching for knowledge.
Through taking care of each other and our environment.
Through pushing boundaries with questions and imaginings.
Through preparing the next generation to be strong, flexible thinkers who want More.
People who are willing to reach for More and willing to work hard to make that happen.
Reaching for More.
So while I’ll never make it to space myself, my stories will and I am beyond excited about it!
Here’s to the power of human creativity and the incredible possibilities that our future will bring.
Keep reaching for more!
