#49 DK Cassidy

I have scribbled stories since I was a child and love to write Literary Fiction, Magical Realism, Science Fiction, and Modern Gothic. Many writers like to specialize, but I enjoy mixing it up and exploring different genres.

The classics of Literature such as the works of Ray Bradbury, Harper Lee, Gabriel García Márquez, Shirley Jackson, and Virginia Woolf, influenced my writing style and love of fiction. This list is not all-inclusive, but gives an insight into which creators shaped me into the writer I am today.

My first memory of brilliant fiction was via the medium of television, rather than through a book. “The Twilight Zone” was a series that messed with my mind. I wanted more stories like those written by Rod Serling, so I walked to my local library and scanned the shelves. As a small child, I tackled books beyond my years, eager to explore the world through my mind’s eye. The patient and helpful children’s librarian found many choices for me to read. I couldn’t decide which ones to checkout. Rather than being forced to choose, she suggested I get them all. I carried my armload of books home, about to begin a journey that still continues. My imagination developed, helping me discover the lack of conventional boundaries in storytelling. Because my fiction is character driven, the focus of my stories are about emotions, relationships, and society.

I live in the Pacific Northwest with my greatest fans: my husband Mark, twin sons Aidan and Jared, and three cats. When not writing, I love to travel, run, use the Oxford comma, and of course read!
