#52 J. Rose Alexander

  1. Rose Alexander,

Manifest number 52

“Shadow in Glass”

I spent my whole life staring up at the sky, following the stars and the moon as they moved in a slow, elegant ballet that mesmerized me. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I want to go there. No specific there, but there. Space. The moon. The stars. The infinite possibilities of our universe.

Originally, I applied and wasn’t fortunate enough to be selected. I knew it was a long shot, and I hoped, but knew not to be upset. Then, the rest of the spots opened and my story—the story I conjured from my brain about a princess and the country is mean to rule and love—was going to the moon.

The friggin’ moon.

I was over the moon. It was, I knew, as close as I will ever get to touching the stars. I will be up there among them, among the infinite.

My real name is Jennifer Alexander Stevens, and I want to be remembered for being a good friend, a good wife, a kind person, and a person who lived as best she could in the time she was given here.

This time capsule will serve to preserve the thoughts and words, the art and dreams of the people of 2021 on a pale blue marble circling a middling star in the Orion-Cygnus arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. A glimpse of what life was in that one small sliver of time. All of us, to a person, hopes that you enjoy our art and maybe learn something—about us, about our works, about our lives.

Grandpa, thank you for showing a little four year old girl those stars in the dark of night, and telling her she could someday be among them.

I am now.

Hey, Orry!

One Thousand Wishes, One Thousand Stars” is written under my second pen name, Katherine Rhodes. While it is the second of the Descendantship series, I think that it’s the best representation of everything I have under the Katherine Rhodes moniker. The stories there are far more risqué than under J. Rose and the emotions in this story again capture what I think are the best parts of my writing.

This story is preceded by “Balance Point” and will be followed by “Brilliance.”

Apathetic Avengers” was written with Aurora Zanhi and it is a total lark. There is humor, irony, teen angst, growing pains and just so many facets to the story and the characters. For this one, I am honestly going to say that I sent it up because the characters themselves would enjoy the fact they were on the moon. I said to Orry, “Rachel and Edgar are going to the moon.” His response was, “Rachel is utterly thrilled by this.” It’s an aspect of writing with Orry that makes the stories so much fun: the characters absolutely have their own personalities not always in tune with ours, and we let that drive the stories.
